Choices

Is it our choices that make us? Or are the choices merely an illusion and we experience moving forward on a path which is already laid out for us? Now the question is if the path is already laid out does the concept of good and bad actions even make sense? But if the choices do exist, where did these choices come from? These choices come from millions, maybe billions of even trillions of choices that our ancestors took before us. So where did their choices come from? They came from the interactions of atomic particles. So are the atomic particles actively choosing to do something or is just a game of random chance? And if it is random at the root of it what can we do about it? And if it is not random chance then either the atomic particles are conscious or just driven by a formula obscured in mathematics somewhere in the layers of physics yet to be discovered.

Again if it is driven by a formula we can’t do anything. And if it driven by the conscious choice of atomic particles how can we mere mortals influence that? But what if those atomic particles chose to come together and form long lasting alliances in which some turned into stars and planets and some turned into living creatures. Taking forward the case of living creatures, specifically humans, did we name that alliance of atomic particles and their choices as consciousness?

Hold this thought for a moment. Let’s think about the word “living”. It’s a thing which we humans defined based on some characteristics which we saw in one type of entities and not in the other ones. But who’s to say that consciousness and this “living” attribute are dependent on one another. The activities being carried out in our brains are being carried out by so called non-living atomic particles at the end. The same particles which are present in other “non-living” things as well.

Do these non-living also have a consciousness which we don’t understand?
